What is ABA?

Behavior analysis is the science of learning. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the application of the science of behavior to real world problems. ABA is most commonly used to support individuals with autism and other disabilities. By using the principles of reinforcement, new skills can be established thus increasing independence for the learner and ultimately improving their quality of life.

Behavior analysis can be applied in any setting where behavior change is the goal. For instance, in addition to autism treatment ABA can be effective in developing self-management strategies, habit reversals, weight loss, self improvement, exercise programs, to name a few. ABA can even be used within organizations to improve employee performance, this is called Organizational Behavior Management (OBM).

Is ABA abusive? I’ve heard…

ABA in itself is not abusive— however that does not discount experiences by autistic individuals who have been outspoken about their negative or even traumatic experiences with ABA. Like anything else, there are good practitioners and not-so-good practitioners. Furthermore, there are practices that were more acceptable in a previous time than would be now. Behavior analysis, like other science improves with understanding. Fun fact, BF Skinner (basically the father of behavior analysis) despised the use of punishment and warned against it in many of his written works.

If this remains a concern, consider working with us via our family led intervention model, where caregivers are the main drivers of treatment, We are happy to continue the discussion as well!
